Fredericksburg Academy is broadening its early childhood program to offer a three-year-old prekindergarten class in addition to our current 4-year-old prekindergarten. Starting in August 2012, three-year-olds will have access to the unique learning experiences provided in FA’s Lower School. These curious, vibrant new students will become part of our FA traditions and will gain a foundation for success in kindergarten and beyond.
The three-year-old prekindergarten class will be capped at 14 children, with a full-time lead teacher and a full-time associate teacher (7:1 student-teacher ratio). The new three-year-old classroom is being designed with the unique needs of this age group in mind. The children will enjoy quality enrichment classes weekly, including music and movement, art, physical education, and foreign language, and they will attend performances and other special events at school. The three-year-olds also will have regular nature and gardening time incorporated into their days at school.
The curriculum for this exciting new program is planned to take advantage of the extraordinary capabilities of children at three years of age. Tammy Brady, who has been teaching 3- to 5-year-olds for nearly 20 years and has taught kindergarten and prekindergarten at FA since 2005, is thrilled to be the lead teacher for this new program.
“Infancy and the early childhood years are referred to as a ‘critical or sensitive period’ or as ‘windows of opportunity’ because the brain has an unprecedented capacity for growth and development with a long-lasting impact on learning. The brain of a three year old is twice as active as that of an adult,” Mrs. Brady said. “The strong foundation we provide at FA will have a profound impact on each child’s educational career and will nourish their potential for a lifetime of learning.”
Fredericksburg Academy is committed to providing the best college-preparatory education in the region for all of our students, from age three through twelfth grade. Our school community saw a need for high-quality, early childhood education and is seeking to fill the gap with this new class. The half-day program (8 a.m.-noon) will have an extended afternoon option. Two-, three-, and five-day options will be offered. This flexibility allows us to tailor our program to best meet the needs of each child and family.
