Upper School:
Grades Nine through Twelve

To inform the school in advance of anticipated absences or to alert the school if your Upper School student is home sick, please send an email to usattendance@fredericksburgacademy.org

The curricular and co-curricular program of the Upper School is designed and implemented with the primary goal of preparing students to gain entrance to and then to excel at the college or university of their choice.  In essence, this means  offering a palette of academic, athletic, and artistic challenges; teaching the analytical and organizational skills required to face them; and giving the encouragement and assistance needed to overcome them.  What grounds this program and makes it both meaningful and current is the environment in which it is provided.  A belief in individual and collective responsibility, with a corresponding call for honor and service, makes the Upper School a community of scholars and citizens who are prepared not only for the rigors of higher education, but who strive to contribute to society.  Furthermore, by embracing the tools that the digital age offers, these scholars and citizens are better able to anticipate and learn from the dizzying pace and scope of change in the world.

Upper School Curriculum

For complete descriptions of Upper School course offerings, please click here to download the 2009-2010 Curriculum Guide.

The Upper School curriculum is based on a course of study essential to a strong college preparatory education, along with elective courses designed to broaden and deepen the student's academic experience. In an environment where students challenge each other and dedicated teachers listen, encourage, and inspire, Fredericksburg Academy students learn to think critically and creatively and to communicate effectively. Advanced level courses as well as college-credit Advanced Placement courses are offered in every discipline.

Students are required to take five credit courses each year; twenty credits are required to earn a Fredericksburg Academy diploma. One credit is awarded for successful completion of the Senior Exhibit, a required project that spans the 11th and 12th grade years and involves an internship, research, the honing of organizational and communication skills, and a final presentation before a committee of faculty and community mentors.

Fredericksburg Academy has long had a commitment to using the best of technology to enhance its educational program. In 2001, the Academy introduced its Laptop Program for grades nine through twelve. With school-wide wireless and networked laptops, Upper School students are accessing and presenting information, writing, analyzing data, and communicating with teachers and students in their core classes of history, English, foreign language, math, and science. Please click here to read more about the integration of technology in the Upper School.
