Laptop Program

One of the noticeable strengths of the Upper School is its technology program. Students in grades nine through twelve lease laptops from the school and use them on a daily basis. Our wireless network, installed projectors, and integration of technology into the academic program help students stay organized, have immediate access to information, and discover new and energized ways to learn.

The laptops also enhance communication between home and school, as parents feel comfortable emailing teachers whenever a visit to school isn’t feasible. Teachers post homework online as well as documents for student use.

A visit to the Academy reveals just how much students rely upon and value their laptops. Some find it a quick way to send a note home about sports practice; others gather missed homework assignments after an absence; students also email teachers with questions about the day’s work.

In the Middle School and Lower School, students use one of the two new IBM computer labs. The philosophy in grades three through twelve is technology integrated into the subject area, rather than taught as a separate discipline. Computer science electives are also available.

Here is a sampling of what is happening in our classes:

  • English teachers evaluate students’ writing using online features, which enable students to revise and edit easily. Email is sometimes used as a form of in-class discussion. Graphic organizers, such as Inspiration, help students visually outline plot and sequence. An online full text database of material is also available for student research.
  • In history, students are able to access primary sources of information as well as maps and diagrams. History teachers use presentation software to encourage organized, polished oral presentations.
  • Geometry students use Geometer Sketchpad to construct and explore mathematical objects. Students are also able to use online sources for drill and practice as needed
  • Foreign language students read online newspapers in their language of choice. Recording software allows practice in the target language. And, of course, culture lessons are enhanced by visiting various websites from across the world.
  • In science, the laptops are used for data gathering and analysis as well as for multimedia presentations.
  • Members of the student newspaper and yearbook staffs use Adobe InDesign CS2, a cutting-edge program, to design their publications.

Take a virtual field trip, create a multimedia presentation, or use the laptop during the daily drive to school to catch up on homework. Having the laptop with them at all times helps students discover exciting, new ways to learn. They also develop strong competencies in computer use. Visit and let us show you how technology is enhancing the way we learn.
