What is the Mission of Fredericksburg Academy?

Fredericksburg Academy defines its mission as “providing an excellent college preparatory liberal arts education to able, motivated students.”  This is accomplished through small classes, a safe, nurturing environment, talented teachers, challenging academics, and supportive parents. Every student at the Academy uses technology across the curriculum and studies the arts and foreign language.  In the Middle and Upper schools, all students have the opportunity to play competitive sports. One-hundred percent of our graduates are accepted to college.

 What makes Fredericksburg Academy unique?

Because of our low student/teacher ratio, faculty and staff at Fredericksburg Academy are able to focus on the individual strengths and needs of every child.  In Lower School, Math and Reading groups ensure that children are taught at their current level of development in those areas, not to the "middle".  Middle and Upper School students work with their advisors to ensure that their academic challenge is balanced with a wide range of activities in athletics and the arts.

Communication with parents is a priority for all members of the faculty and staff.  The school believes that parents are an essential partner in providing our students with the best education possible.  Formal conferences are scheduled each year, but each teacher has voice mail and e-mail and is readily accessible for more regular communications.

Is the tuition affordable?

The Academy has a strong commitment to providing financial aid to families on the basis of need. The Academy encourages all academically qualified students who are interested in the Academy’s programs to apply for admission regardless of the family financial status. The Academy’s Financial Aid program is designed to assist families who cannot meet the full cost of an independent school education.  For more information, please contact Lori J. Adams, Director of Admission and Financial Aid, at (540) 898-0020, ext. 262 or by e-mail at ladams@fredericksburgacademy.org.

Are all of your graduates accepted to college?

Yes.  Fredericksburg Academy is a college preparatory school, and 100 percent of Fredericksburg Academy graduates are accepted to four-year colleges and universities. College counseling, which begins in the tenth grade year and continues through college placement, is a personalized, ongoing process, involving both the student and his or her family.  Our students are accepted at selective universities and colleges nationwide.  Fredericksburg Academy graduates are currently attending or recently attended the University of Virginia, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Pepperdine University, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Duke University, the University of Southern California, and Dickinson College.

What is the Honor Code?

The Honor Code requires that all students at Fredericksburg Academy do not lie, cheat, or steal. At the beginning of the year, each Upper School student signs their Honor Plaque stating that he or she agrees to abide by the Honor Code.

How does the advisory system in the Middle and Upper Schools work?

Each student in the Middle and Upper Schools is paired with a faculty advisor in the fall. The role of the advisor is to serve as a source of information and support for students and parents. The advisor helps to plan the student's academic and extracurricular activities and guide the student to set and assess long-term goals. Advisor and advisee meet throughout the school year (especially before and after grading periods) to discuss any necessary adjustments in the student's schedule, study habits, or class performance.

Do you have before and after school care?

Yes.The Falcon Club is Fredericksburg Academy's Before and After School Program. The program opens at 6:30 a.m. for the Before School Program and stays open until 6 p.m. for the After School Program. Students enjoy supervised play time and work on homework in the same facility where they spend their school day.  Caring staff help make the transition to or from school seamless.

What is the Senior Exhibit?

In the spring of their junior year, students begin work on the Senior Exhibit. The Exhibit requires students to take the initiative in their intellectual development through three steps: choosing a topic, actively learning (in an internship, volunteer work, lessons, etc.), and applying their knowledge (teaching, performing, developing, etc.). In the spring of their senior year, students present their work before a panel of faculty and community mentors. This capstone requirement places emphasis on independent and experiential learning and on honing organizational and communication skills necessary for a life of learning.
