Application Process
Applications are accepted throughout the year. Since space in some grades may be limited, prospective families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible in the year preceding enrollment. Applications are considered on a rolling basis. When an application file is complete, it will be reviewed by our Admission Committee for an admission decision. The Admission Office makes every effort to notify families of the admission decision between two and six weeks after the file has been completed. Parents of applicants will be notified via mail of the admission and/or placement* decision.
The Admission Committee appreciates the time and energy you devote to the application process and looks forward to reviewing your application. The following paperwork and procedures are required to be considered for admission (the application and other documents can be downloaded here):
1. Application form and a $50 application fee.
2. Teacher Recommendation/Evaluation Form(s) One is required for applicants to prekindergarten through grade 5. Two recommendation forms (one from the current language arts teacher and one from the current math teacher) are required for applicants to grades 6-12. Please note that recommendation forms should be given by you to your child's teacher(s) and returned directly to Fredericksburg Academy by your child's current school. Parents are also required to complete and return a Teacher Recommendation Parent Waiver to the Admission Office.
3. Report cards/transcripts from the end of the two previous school years and the most recent from the current school year.
4. Results of previous standardized testing.
5. All students must do admission testing as part of the application process. Children entering prekindergarten through grade 3 do admission testing during their required admission visit. Portions of the ERB CTP IV are administered to candidates for grades 4-12 on the following Saturday mornings: January 23, March 27, and June 12. Testing takes place on campus. During the summer months, testing is administered by individual appointment.
6. Required classroom visits will vary depending on the age of the prospective student. During their visits, applicants to Grades PK-3 will meet with a teacher for a developmental screening that takes approximately 20 minutes. Applicants to prekindergarten visit for two hours. Applicants for kindergarten visit for three hours. Applicants to Grades 1-12 spend a full day on campus shadowing a current student. Students applying to Grades 9-12 will have an interview with a Fredericksburg Academy faculty member on their visit day.
7. The admission staff needs to see an original birth certificate or passport in order to complete a required form for the state of Virginia and to complete the admission file.
These requirements may be completed in any order; however, the Admission Office must have a completed application form in order to administer admission testing to any candidate. No applicant will be considered for admission until all required items have been submitted to Fredericksburg Academy. When a child is admitted and a contract is sent, the child's family has a limited amount of time (generally two weeks) in which to respond to the offer of enrollment. The child's place is only held during the stated time window.
*In addition to making admission decisions, the Admission Committee determines placement in the appropriate age or grade level. Occasionally, a student may be offered admission to a level other than that for which he or she applied. In these circumstances, the Admission Committee has thoroughly and thoughtfully considered all of the elements in the student's application file and has concluded that placement at another level would best ensure success at Fredericksburg Academy.
