Meet the Head of Lower School: Fredericksburg Academy

Pam Long is an educational leader with over two decades of experience in public, charter, and independent school settings.

She currently serves as the Head of Lower School and Early Childhood at Fredericksburg Academy in Virginia, where she oversees curriculum, faculty development, and student life for the Academy’s youngest learners.

Dr. Long holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her dissertation explored culturally responsive teaching and its impact on curriculum and classroom practice. She also holds degrees from The Pennsylvania State University (B.S. in Elementary and Kindergarten Education, M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction) and a Graduate Certificate in School Leadership from Appalachian State University.

Throughout her career, Dr. Long has led transformational initiatives including curriculum redesign, faculty coaching programs, student leadership councils, and the development of STEAM and competency-based learning models. Her leadership is rooted in a commitment to inclusive, student-centered learning environments that celebrate diversity and nurture lifelong learning.

Prior to her role at Fredericksburg Academy, Dr. Long served as Head of Lower School at the Ranney School in New Jersey and led academic programs in Washington, D.C. as a district math and science manager. She also served as Head of School at Union Day School in North Carolina during a period of rapid growth and campus expansion.

Dr. Long is active in national professional organizations and has participated in leadership development programs with the Heads Network, the Klingenstein Center, and the National Association of Independent Schools. She brings a collaborative and mission-driven approach to every role and is passionate about supporting both students and educators in reaching their full potential.

When not at school, Dr. Long and her husband enjoy exploring local trails together and share a love of trail running.
